     Thatch is the dead and decaying layer of plant material that accumulates between the soil surface and the healthy blades of grass. Although thin layers of thatch help reduce soil compaction and can actually increase durability of your lawn, too much thatch built up over several years can prevent light, water and oxygen from reaching your lawns root zone.
